The city’s calendar stays local despite global turmoil. Friday’s temperature is forecast to hit 85°F, ideal for the free concert at the Hatch Memorial Shell on the Esplanade, part of the Boston Landmarks Orchestra’s summer series. The program runs from 7 to 9 p.m., open to all.
Art and Culture on Offer
At the Museum of Fine Arts on Huntington Avenue, the Fashioned by Sargent exhibition continues its run through October 12, showcasing over 50 works alongside period costumes. Tickets are $25 for adults, $10 for students. Across the river at the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, the Objects of Addiction exhibit, examining 19th-century opium paraphernalia, remains on view through July 26. Admission is free for all visitors.
On Saturday, the SoWa Open Market in the South End runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. along Harrison Avenue, offering local crafts and street food from vendors like Mei Mei Dumplings and Union Square Donuts. The market operates rain or shine.
Music and Community Gatherings
For live music, the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood in Lenox hosts a Saturday evening program featuring Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Lawn tickets start at $22. Closer to downtown, the City Winery on Channel Center Street books the soul band Lake Street Dive for a 7:30 p.m. show Friday and Saturday, with tickets starting at $59.
Sunday’s highlight is the annual Fiesta Boricua in Franklin Park, celebrating Puerto Rican culture with live salsa bands, food stalls, and a parade from the park’s golf course entrance at 1 p.m. Organizers encourage attendees to take the MBTA Orange Line to Forest Hills station; parking is limited.
The weekend also offers a chance to refuel. The Boston Public Market at Haymarket Square, open Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., sells fresh produce and prepared foods from local farmers. The nearby Haymarket Pushcart Market, one of the oldest outdoor markets in the country, operates Friday and Saturday under the expressway overpass.
For families, the New England Aquarium on Central Wharf has extended hours through summer, open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Online advance purchase is recommended; adult tickets are $34, children 3-11 are $24.
No major street closures are scheduled. The MBTA’s Red, Orange, and Green lines run on a regular weekend schedule. As always, check service alerts before heading out.
