Boston Parks and Recreation has scheduled more than a dozen free fitness sessions for July 2026, including group runs on the Charles River Esplanade and walking workouts that start at the Boston Common.

Summer brings longer daylight hours and milder evenings that encourage outdoor activity after work or on weekends, when many residents seek ways to stay active without gym fees amid rising household costs.

The Esplanade Association coordinates Tuesday evening runs that begin at 6:30 p.m. near the Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade, while the Boston Parks Department runs Saturday morning yoga on the lawn at Boston Common starting at 8 a.m. These programs tie into the city’s long-standing marathon culture that draws locals to the same routes used by training groups year-round.

Key Locations and Schedules

Participants on the Esplanade meet at the Arthur Fiedler Footbridge entrance and follow a three-mile loop toward the Longfellow Bridge before returning. Sessions on the Common gather at the Brewer Fountain and trace segments of the Freedom Trail toward the State House, covering about two miles with stops for stretching. Both series continue every week through July 31 with no registration required.

City data from last summer showed average attendance of 180 people per session across similar free programs, with the largest turnout recorded on July 19 when 240 runners joined the Esplanade loop. All events remain open to all ages and fitness levels, and organizers provide water stations at the starting points.

Getting Started This Month

Residents can arrive 15 minutes early at either the Hatch Shell or Brewer Fountain to join the next session. Those seeking updates should visit the Boston Parks and Recreation website or stop by the visitor center at 148 Tremont Street for printed schedules. Anyone with health concerns should check with a physician before beginning new activity.
