Boston Freedom Trail: Complete Self-Guided Walking Tour
The Freedom Trail is Boston's most famous experience — a 2.5-mile self-guided walking route connecting 16 historic sites from the American Revolution. A red brick line (or red painted stripe) leads visitors from Boston Common through Beacon Hill, the North End and across the river to Charlestown. It's one of America's great urban heritage walks.
The 16 Sites
- Boston Common — America's oldest public park, starting point
- Massachusetts State House — Bulfinch-designed dome visible from the Common
- Paul Revere House (North End) — oldest surviving structure in downtown Boston (1680)
- Old North Church — "One if by land, two if by sea" — where Paul Revere's lanterns were hung in 1775
- Bunker Hill Monument (Charlestown) — 294 steps to the top for panoramic views
- USS Constitution ("Old Ironsides") — the world's oldest commissioned naval vessel, still in service
Self-Guided vs Guided
The trail is completely walkable independently (free, with the printed map from Boston Common Visitor Centre). Guided tours run by National Park Service rangers are free and depart from the Visitor Centre — excellent for historical context. Allow 3-4 hours for the full trail.
