Charlestown Boston: Bunker Hill, USS Constitution & Historic Harbour
Charlestown sits just across the Charles River from downtown Boston — accessible via the MBTA ferry from Long Wharf or a 15-minute walk over the bridge — and packs more American Revolutionary history per square metre than almost anywhere in the country. The Bunker Hill Monument, a 67-metre granite obelisk commemorating the 1775 battle, rewards the 294-step climb with sweeping views of Boston Harbor and the city skyline. The USS Constitution, moored at the Charlestown Navy Yard, is the world's oldest commissioned naval vessel still afloat — commissioned in 1797 and earning the nickname 'Old Ironsides' during the War of 1812. Both are free to visit and form part of the Freedom Trail's northern extension. Warren Tavern, Boston's oldest tavern (est. 1780), still pours cold beers across from the Monument. The neighbourhood is walkable, compact, and utterly packed with stories — spend at least half a day here.
