Boston Freedom Trail: Complete Walking Guide to 16 Historic Sites
The Freedom Trail is America's most important heritage walk — a 2.5-mile red-brick line through the streets of Boston connecting 16 sites that collectively tell the story of the American Revolution. Starting at Boston Common (America's oldest public park, 1634) and ending at the USS Constitution in Charlestown, the trail passes Paul Revere's House (the oldest remaining structure in downtown Boston, built 1680), the Old North Church where lanterns signalled Revere's midnight ride, Faneuil Hall where the Sons of Liberty debated independence, and the site of the Boston Massacre. The trail is entirely self-guided and free — download the NPS app or follow the physical brick line set into the pavement. Allow 3–4 hours for a comprehensive walk with stops. The Bunker Hill Monument at the trail's Charlestown end (280 steps, no lift) offers the best panoramic view of Boston and the harbour. Guided tours depart from the Boston Common Visitor Center daily. The trail is equally rewarding in winter — crowds thin dramatically and the city's colonial character is more present.
